I'm servicing the brakes on my 1942 WC21 (military half ton), and noticed two of the wheel mounting studs on one hub are bent.

Can I use a hammer to remove these without hurting anything, or do I need to have them pressed out?

It isn't a job I've done, but I believe you can just punch them back through and tap new ones in. It may be worth putting a tired wheel nut on first and trying to knock them straight, rather than changing them.

agreed, I'd try to straighten it too before replacing. They should drive out though without the need of a press.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give a try with a hammer.

Think I will replace them, though. It looks like the weight of the truck came down on them, and buggered the threads. I've got replacements ordered from VPW.

I'd leave them in place till you actually had the replacements though, just in case.

I had a couple of bent ones too... easy to knock em out. But since three of my hubs had right hand threads I bought enough to make them all right hand. And I had enough extra rh lug nuts to go around. Good luck.

I drove them out with just medium blows from a 2 lb hammer. Once they were out, I could see how bent they were and the threads were buggered pretty bad. The new studs from VPW matched perfectly. They went back in with the hammer, then I put a spacer and nut on them to make sure they were in all the way. Everything went very easy.
