WC51 radio vehicle

Post by martylee »

Hi!

I just had this thought, that perhaps I'd turn one of my wc51s into a radio vehicle. Just found a book (TM 11-2725) on the net about how to install radio. Does anyone have real photos of such cars? I'd really like to see it before I decide what to do.

WC Radio outfit

One of the older issues of the MVPA publication had a story about a gentleman from So Carolina who had done just that. Do not remeber the issue nor year, but at least you now have a starting point

Thanks Jim!

I'll look into it! If someone had photos, I'd love to see...

Get hold of a copy of Louis Meulstee's books wireless for the warriors. It shows the kit, technical details including circuit diagrammes and layouts of kit in vehicles.

R-matey
I'v been doing the same homework myself,
a guy up the road has a stewert and a command car with scr 508/528
radios, the radios seem to be easy enough to find but the mounts are
a little more difficult.
fortunatley he has all the parts and were getting ready to flip the switch and see if any of the smoke leaks out,
if you see or hear about any microwave dissruptions in colorado
youll know what happened.

well the smoke didnt escape, woo woo, :D
any ideas on what radio crystals there using out in re enactor land,? :?:
I think I,m going to put in the crystals that it shows in the manual,
for the 508/528 set.
I'd hate to have change freqs in the field, the process of re alighning everything, is a real pain.

now I'v herd a rumor that the resistors tend to dry rot?
wounder what thay made them out of :?:

The resistors are carbon and yes are prone to damp and drying. The capacitors are often paper or the bigger ones oil, they do go well if overloaded. Don't know what the US is like but the UK has become quite reasonable over vintage sets latley.

FMP
hmm makes you wounder how the fungas and moisture proofing varnish
has performed over the years :?:
and what was the recipie for the laquer thay used?
I wounder if it should be left alone, or if a modern polyurathane should be oversprayed, to help preserve the cloth wiring and stuff

The original was shellac, modern can be used as long as it is proper insulating laquer. Try the local Radio Shack or RS components.

We are a group of licensed Radio amateurs and got a US-Army Signal Corps display that can be seen and operated on events. Andre the mayor collector of these radio's has a WC52 with a build in radio for this job. Here are some pictures of using it on a HAM event.
