Hola Gordon,

I think it might be Specific Engineering Order.

Special wonder, why special?. Specific is better

Do you agree, Gordon?.

I just think Special sounds better, but maybe we will see for sure some time.

Incidentally that tag I'm sure is 4250-xxx You can only really see the '25', but I'm sure the first numeral is a 4, and the fourth is a 0. I'm sure Eric Bannerman found a WC 64 with the tag still in place and it was 4250 as well.

Just got the info back from Chrysler, arrived about 5 minutes ago. Along with a load of other useful info. The build date for chassis number 81687980 is Febuary 4th 1944. Seems very late for a WC54, I had thought production had stopped by that time.

Just placed my check in the mail for my ambulance's build card....on the 70th anniversary (week) of the start of 3/4 ton production.

here is what i predict it will say

81579534 WC54 W-714667! 10/21/42! 4239-5000! T214-41000!

will post the the actual build card immediately upon receipt!

In order to achieve Sylvia's 100 build card goal, I call for a 3/4 ton build card blitz!!! So, buy your '42 a 70th B-day present!

Compliments of Chrysler, I can now tell you the WC54 81687980 was built 4th February 1944. Engine T214-163784 Body 2, and I can't tell if its 11 or 77 96

Got a nice little package in the mail from Chrysler Historical today. answered a few questions but left a few gaps...

TD20, 8,093,293, was built August 8th 1939 for the US TREASURY, and still has the original engine in it, T72-7051

VC1, 8,641,217, (just a bare chassis at the minute ) was built April 24th 1940 for US WAR DEPT and had engine T202- 3970 in it ( hand-altered from - 3979 that was intended for it )

VC3 pickup 8,641,993 was built May 6th 1940 for US WAR DEPT ( it has May 7th 1940 as the 'Date of Delivery' on the dash plate ) Original engine was T202-4339

WC36 Carryall 8,110,4100 was built December 9th 1941 for US WAR DEPT but has 11th January 1942 on the 'Date of Delivery' plate. It does still have the very first military T112 engine in it - T112-60001

WD21 panel 9,285,264, that Paul Christensen kindly shipped for me, though a 1941 model, was built 19th November 1940 with engine T116-1189 in it. The Los Angeles California build card is a different format with less info in some parts than the Detroit equivalent but more in others. It shows that the truck was SCHEDULED 15th November 1940, BUILT 19th November 1940, and DELIVERED 25th November 1940 to Bakersfield Car and Auto Supply The original colour was Gray, but it looks to have been overpainted OD so it might have been purchased or requisitioned from the dealer as the delivery date was twelve days before Pearl Harbor.

The only real disappointment is that none of the military card copies show the original USA numbers, but that would have been hoping for too much I suppose.

It does show that the Build Date can be immediately before the Date of Delivery ( like the VC 3 ) or that there can be a gap of a month, like the Carryall

I'll get them all copied and sent to Sylvia, but it'll take a while

Interesting stuff, Gordon. now, that TD-20 truck is the one that you got out of Utah, right? I wonder the background on that, ended up there from US Treasury. Possibly was used by the mint, in Denver? or even in those days, could have been Coast Guard truck, but maybe that would have been marked as such.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, I'm looking for theories from the group please. I think US Coast Guard or Border Guard would have been marked as such on the Build Card.

Background;

TD20 one ton pickup built August 8th 1939 in Detroit for the US Treasury. I don't think the build location is in any way significant other than all the Government-contract trucks seem to have been built there.

She was Dodge dark green off the line, and in the ensuing 60 years she had precisely two coats of Olive Drab paint, with the first coat being much neater than the second. Military-type dashboard tyre pressure and speed stencilling on both coats of OD was identical, size, typeface, layout.

Sixty-ish years later she was bought by Tom Gale in Logan, Utah at some sort of farm sale after the farmer had moved on. He put her on E-Bay, but no bids because of terrible rustout in the header panel, so I made him an offer and for the last ten years or more she has lived with me here in Falkirk.

Only four post-factory modifications, and the fabrication standard of the first three is roughly the same, suggesting all were done same period of ownership.

1. A steel bar hooked to the drivers front chassis rail as a tow hook,
2. A light angle iron and bar structure for towing at the rear ( but no sign of a military hitch or trailer socket )
3. A piece of 12" steel channel welded to the right running board with a stub of pipe and flange to make a very nice spare wheel mount.
4. The left headlight had been swapped with a 1941 half ton miltary WC headlight, with an underslung running light pod - visible on the first image on the following page;

http://www.gwim2.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/td20.htm

My working assumptions are that she went straight from Detroit to a Treasury-owned facility near Utah in the fall of 1939 and was painted OD green at once, then repainted at the same facility a few years later ( stencilling was identical, remember )

The headlight was possibly replaced around this time and it wasn't a common headlight configuration, used on T207 only I think maybe last few months of 1940 and first few of 1941.

Sold off locally in the late 1940's or first half of the 1950's, bought by a farmer, all used up, then left in a barn.

So, US Treasury-owned facility within say, 100 miles of Utah in late 1939 - any guesses? How far from the mint in Denver would that be Dave? Would the mint have been guarded by the Army ( miltary headlight) and used a mix of Treasury and Army vehicles?

I might have to think the US Civilian Conservation Corps markings I have on her now.
