My 1944 Leyland Hippo is one of only 10 believed to be still running out of over 1000 built. It's National Service registration was 70 RE 85. One of the others still running is 70 RE 83.

He has note books with sr numbers from VCs WC1/2s, MB GPW MA GP BRC and M series trucks from when he just got into the hobbie in the early 1970s. He stopped when the MVPA started putting out dirctories.

thanks for the info, I have added it to the database...in doing so, the last WC54 cannot be, since 64 production had begun...can you add any clarity?

I'm focusing on 3/4 tons in an attempt to figure out hood numbers for my ambulances...I'm about done, but don't have a desire to incorperate the 6x6's...care to pick up the slack?

Your card actually reads "66" for the body which is the suffix of the 4266 code for the pick up body only that was used on the WC-51 and WC-52. Give me a few days and I'll write your card up and e-mail it to you along with the info you requested.

The last WC54 inhis note book is listed as belonging to John Mulcahy, MVPA member number 243, 900 miles formery in the Dutch army, year 1945.
You are correct, they were making WC64s by then. Probably has something to do with a European rebuild.

Looks like it was built in mid-December 42

Got my build card for the WC-52 today, feel free to update the database with these :

This is the info I can read on the truck :
Chassis # : 81723127
Engine # T214-221331
Firewall plate # : 4290-140685

And the build card says :
Chassis # : 81723127
Engine # : T214-196649
Build date : Aug 19th 1944
Body Model # : 66
Body # : 140685

So, one can at least conclude that the engine was replaced at some point. The current engine has a Swedish rebuild tag from 1951. Can someone clarify the body model for me, 66 versus 90 ? Looked up model 66 as "express body w transverse seats", is that also open cab setup ? Seems odd that the body model differs but the body number matches.

Serial and body numbers tie up with the vehicle, motor has been replaced with a Norweigan rebuild (vehicle was in Norweigan service as 2821 18-5)
Bonnet Numbers found on strip down were 718279 and I also found 710852 on the rear roof panel.

Thanks for your info...the bonnet number is for an early production (Aug 42) vehicle...the rear panel number is from an even earlier production (July 42) vehicle..(norweigan rebuilds probably cannabalized many a US Chassis)..registration number for your ambulance should be 724250 + or - 50ish. Based on a close serial number with known registration I calculated 724261 as a registration for your ambulance. Have you restored your ambulance and done final paint?

The ambulance has been restored however it is the end of the season over here so I will be doing some restoration over the winter. I have to admit that I use vinyl stickers to get those sharp bonnet numbers (please don't bombard me over this!) so changing the number will not be a big problem. Thanks for estimating the number for me, I had a go and was miles out. Regards Steve
