Hi All:

Is this likely to be the original engine for my 1940 VF-402? The block serial number is:

D2-55937

Thanks!

Dont think so

D2 would be a 1936 Dodge 217 cu in car engine code, would probably fit any half or 3/4 ton truck with some work, but surely too small for a 1.5 ton VF?

Thanks Gordon; unfortunately, that's what's in it! As your Blue Yonder site shows, I have the wrong engine. Sorry I forgot about your site- I have it bookmarked, but with the web address instead of something recognizable. I'll be changing that next.

As to the enigine size, you'd think I'd be a bit more knowledgable by now, but.... Isn't the standard 1/2 ton engine 218 c.u.? Then the next engine size 251 c.u.? So what is the VF truck size engine supposed to be (T203-)?

I tried the "Models and Engines" link here, but it didn't go to any engine info.

I never bothered to learn them Ken.

The VC T202 is a 201 cu in, WC's started at around 217 cu in and went up to 230 cu in during T215 series, and stayed there all through 3/4 tons and towards M series.

If you have a look at the bore and stroke figures, they just increased the bore a step at a time, and the crank throw. I belive 230 is as much as you can get from that block because it is a short block, with two close cylinder pairs (they weren't close when it was 201 cu in, but by the time it was out to 230...

The T203 is either 226 or 228 cu in (I've seen both quoted) so with 217 you are only short 9 or 11 cu in on the original engine. If the replacement was a later engine it would probably have a higher compression and that would make up some HP, but with an earlier engine it is probably even lower compression and less HP.

Ah well, just run it but keep your eyes open for a T203, eh?
