Basically it's about the K42 / K43 Chevrolets

The K44 has a PTO and an earth augur, so no winch - no problems.
The K43 has a PTO and a rear-mounted drum winch - I've seen a few
The K42 - Telephone Maintenance with no winch ? never seen or heard of one.

I've seen an outline drawing of a K43 with a front bumper winch, but that's all it was, could easily have been drawn in error.

So, my suggestion is that all the Telephone Maintenance trucks were K43 with the rear drum winch and no front winch - any evidence for the K42 anywhere? That wouldn't be the one of 1.5 4 x 2 would it??

It might say it's a K42, but my eyes tell me it is a K43, with the rear drum winch as they all had.

If you look closely, you can see the chain drive cover between the cab and the body where the drive comes up from the chassis, you can also see it has the rear stabilising jacks slung under the back, and the mounts for the crossbar pulley pole are just about visible on the extreme rear edge.

That truck has the rear drum winch, as if it hasn't there would be absolutely no point in the chain cover, jacks, and pulley pole mount. you just are not going to have those items on a truck with no winch. I'd state that the truck in the picture is a standard K43, and not a K42.

Let me attack this another way too - any photos, anywhere, of a similar truck with a front winch as well as or in place of the rear winch?

these are the only pics I'v found, and you cant tell much from them.
the TM 11-487 october 44 doesent even mention the k-42
and my version of the 2800 kinda sucks, you might have better luck over on the cckw forum.
so far all i'v found is vague mentions on typed lists. nothing definitive.

I've not seen all those pics of K43s before.

He has one K44 Earth Augur truck identified as a K42, no big deal, but I was staring at the lowest K43 shot, just a few images from the bottom of the page, trying to work out what was wrong. Then I realised I could see the end of the drum winch shaft protruding through the body side, so the negative has been reversed and the image is the wrong way round.

I'd suggest changing the K list to read the K43 as Telephone maintenance with rear drum winch, and putting the K42 in as unknown. Maybe we will find it one day, but it can't have made any real quantity as it didn't appear in the 4 x 4 Chevrolet manual.

Maybe it was a 4 x 2 linemans truck then, like that one you posted a while back ?

hmm, could very well be, seeing the pole trucks in the lousana manoovers
I guess puts them in the pre war catagory, and the k-50 dodge.
in the war catagory, so I'm guessing the war happened somewhere between k-45 and k-50.
all that stuff considered "limited standard" has been really hard to track down. finnaly got hold of someone at the HEM museum, sounds like thay have a compleate set of scr-268 manuals, I'm hoping if I can ID all the radar stuff, then the unknowns can be targeted a little better.

I guess this front end is unique to the 41 chevy.
which puts it in the same time frame as the 41 dodge.
I guess no one has production numbers or contract info
on the chevy?
at least not that there admitting to.
the early usa number makes you wunder if it was just a prototype?

I'm thinking here that the K51 signals chev, plus the K43 and k44, were made for the Defence Department especially for the Signal Corps, but the little 4 x 2 half ton linesman trucks could have been made in quantity for general use and wouldn't actually have to have a K-number?

You've started a job here that will take a while to complete, but as long as you keep going, adding info, and correcting, it is certainly worth doing.
