what are the last 2 digits of the 4239 mean, 42 is 1942, 39 desinates it to be what?? i can remember the breakdown of the 19 29 39 etc.. jc

19 = reconnaissance
29 = radio reconnaissance
39 = ambulance
49 = carryall
62 = closed cab
66 = express body with transverse rear seats
76 = express body with no rear seats
90 = flat face cowl with bucket seats

I've just started my adventure with WC 52 and I see there are a lot of experts in this forum.
Can anybody help me please, I'm trying to find out what my truck body tag means. It seems to be unusual, as I've seen that they use to have 8 digits like xxyy - zzzz.
mine have 10 digits. 4290 - 163539 can anybody tell me what it means ?
according to frame number It's late '44 truck.

42 90 means--1942
4290- flat faced cowl, open cab
163539, production number, its the 163 539 off the assembly line,,
which does make sense to me? maybe it does,, jc

certainly I've bought my truck from Sweden.
I was just wandering why there is such a difference in year of build.
As You said body tag shows it's 1942, but frame number - 81749641 indicates it was end of 1944 and it has 12 Volt installation, wooden cargo bed and shorter left side. It seems like both of this tags were originally there and nobody replace them.
Have You got any ideas ??

Probably been rebuild some time. If you contact Chrysler you can get a build card wich will tell you the original body and engine number.

The way the body tags work is that they mark the start of a given body type. 4290 is an open cab body that was started in 1942. The body tags for WC-51s were 4290 from 1942 to 1945.

The way you tell the year is the numbers after the 4290- those numbers can be compared to other trucks to see where yours falls. As you have a high number I would guess it is original to your 1944 truck.

I wrote a page about body tags on Power Wagons, the numbering is not exactly the same, but the same theory applies.

The 42 part just refers to the original specification and contract date. It has nothing to do with manufacturing year. Your frame number is what will date it. It does look like a late '44 or maybe early '45 one.
