Motorpool is waking up, did the pre season PM checks on the CCKW and a little minor maintenance on the transfer case. I bought the Timken Transfer NOS in the crate from my friend Sam Werner, he always has a story to go with his parts, he claimed it came out of Wheelus AFB in Libya in the early 60s. Tires are still at 55 pounds plus or minus a pound after sitting all winter. Gotta check toe in the RF tire is just showing minor cupping, that means I will adjust Toe In using the RH Tierod end. I have one of those GI Issue Toe In Guages that is spring loaded with the chains.

Plan to install 3Rd Series Hydrovac in a few weeks, it has a NOS 1968 dated 1st Series Hydrovac manufactured by Bendix of France, it works perfect, but the upgrade is better and safer. CCKWs with the 3rd Series Hydrovac tend to have more sensitive brakes. I will be using an original installation kit with the special brackets and hardware for the upgrade and will continue with Silicon Brake Fluid. I have about a dozen gallons left. The Master Cylinder will have to be removed and the Check Valve removed as the 3rd Series has the check valve at the Hydrovac. If the check valve is not removed from the Master Cylinder, the brakes will experience "Lock UP" and will not release. The Master Cylinder will get a new Wagner Kit as I have them on the shelf.

The 3rd Series upgrade kits are a post war item, late 40s, not all trucks got them and what is strange is that they still stocked and maintained the 1st and 2nd Series Hydrovacs on the CCKW up until they were replaced by M-Series.

Sirens/lights etc are not illegal on historic or antique cars. You may want to check your states laws, but almost all will have exceptions for historic/antique vehicles.

I know there are PLENTY of antique fire trucks with sirens/lights that are on the road during the many cruises that go on in PA.

MB has had its' out of storage PM and is now operational along with the CCKW. M-37 and M-38A1 are next. All are maintained to strict U.S. Army specification.

The current MVs in Rangers Motorpool are family, they are all old restorations and have been there for many years.
MB 38 years
M-38A1 34 years
CCKW 26 Years
M-37 25 years
M-37B1 1 year
MBT 5 Years
Ben Hur 21 years
M-1 Bomb Lift 19 years
M-114 15 years from 1992-2007
All are turnkey, and maintained to US Army spec. Sometimes I wonder why so many when there is only one driver. Each vehicle is a constant reminder of my pleasant Army experiences or the good old 1940s-50s days of old Dow Air Force Base, the Main Gate was just 25' across the road, and the end of the runway was 400' to one side.

UNIFORM OF THE DAY.
Ranger isn't much for dressing up in military duds and playing soldier, but sometimes for special occasions, the WWII Army Air Force A-3 Cap, or the early WWII Daisy Mae Cap comes out of storage to wear around the MB or CCKW.

RANGERS MOTORPOOL has that touch that only a trained Army Mechanic can produce, the vehicles have none of the sundry maintenance problems many experience. The credit belongs to the US Army, TMs, proper tools and years of OJT supervised by WWII/Korean era Ordnance Mechanics.

The Supply Room in the RANGER Motorpool has some of the most unique and essential rare items for the discriminating collector. The technical advice is without equal.

RANGER's CCKW was only driven 60 miles during 2008 season, the dispatcher had it easy. RANGER intends to make up for those 60 miles this year. A couple more 10 mile round trips to Dunkin Donuts will suffice.
RANGER keeps current on all MVs in the Motorpool, the subject TMs and reference material do not gather dust.

What does the Motor Sergeant of RANGERS MOTORPOOL do when a CCKW or Jeep restoration is more or less complete?
The answer is buy accessories to stow away or display with the vehicle. I have recently added a realistic WWII GP Bomb from "Bombs Away LLC" to display with the M-1 Bomblift, and for the CCKW, the realistic Ammo Crates manufactured by Rob Lihani of "Mail Call" and Combat Garage" fame. they sure look nice in the rear of the CCKW, MBT trailer, or M-37.
RANGER is not only a CCKW fan but is fond of all WWII and Korean era MVs. Uncle Sammy was good to him and trained him to be fluent in bumper to bumper Wheeled and Tracked vehicles of the period.

There is no shame in displaying a Deadline sign on an MV. That is a notice that a particular vehicle is not operational at the present time. In may not be operational because it is awaiting scheduled service, awaiting a part, or the Motor Sergeant had deadlined it because it has not had driver's maintenance.
The Deadline signs I remember from the 60s were approximately 4"X12" and were Red background with Yellow lettering. They were displayed prominantly on the Windshield or Grill.
