Need shifting advice from half-tonners.

I've got a Dodge WD40 half ton closed cab that I just got on the road. It seems to start out easily in 2nd gear. Then I double clutch into third. Between 3rd and 4th, I pause with the clutch pedal in, then it slips easily into 4th. My problem is I sometimes grind a bit going into 3rd.

My question is: on level ground, what speed do people accelerate to in 2nd before shifting to 3rd?

Thanks for any help.

I wouldn't expect to be more than 20mph in second, but I wouldn't normally double de-clutch going UP through the gears, only going down.

This seems like a stupid comment but make sure your pushing the clutch all the way in. When I started driving my WC, my foot would be lazy and I would have some issues with shifting.

Not stupid at all. I think I did this several times, so I'll watch myself.

In the late 60's I drove a Power Wagon for a summer job. Great fun! We found we could shift some gears without using the clutch and with no grinding. I seem to have lost that touch over the years.
