I need to replace my fuel tank in my WC-51. The Vin # indicates it was produced in late July 42. Is there a difference in tanks for early model and later models, or are they all the same for all WC-51 regardless of model year. Thanks for your help. Dean

Pretty much all the same, but I think there may be a slight difference in the small vent tube. Not sure though.

There are only two part numbers for the tank, one does Command and Carryall, the other Weapon Carrier.

Does your WC51 still have the small filler? My October 1942 WC51 was rebuilt with the larger filler tank (with vent tube and large fuel cap). Many early WC51’s were rebuilt by Dodge in 1944 and 1945. The upgrade included the larger 9 5/8” differentials, low side seats, rerouted speedometer cable, and late engine with PVC valve. If you don’t find the early fuel tank you could fit a later model if can find one.

If you replace, or scrap your original tank, cut out and save the filler neck. It could be grafted onto another tank without too much effort.

I don't even remember that. Actually, those tanks are mostly symmetrical so keep the whole tank, you can remove any rusted or thin sections but it should be possible to make one good tank from two rusted out onesie you are careful.

I thought pcv valves started on the late 1/2 tons ? never seen a 3/4 ton without a pcv valve. most of mine have been 42s but don't know what month

I simply cut a 18 inch square opening in the the top of my tank to get at the baffles and the inside. I sandblasted the inside of the tank, rewelded any holes and the baffles back. I then rewelded the top back on and coated the inside with POR15. It's time consuming, but I get to keep the original tank (small filler neck) in my 42 WC 51.
I was told that once you put POR15 in your tank don't use the cheap fuel that contains ethanol, apparently it will erode the POR15. Just use premium fuel...
