Oil plugg on axle.

Im rebuilding a 9 5/8 axle and the oil plug at the bottom of the welded cover is gone.
The hole was brassed and from inside its a smooth hole, no threads at all.
Maybe it was drilled out, maybe not..

Question, what kind of thread should it be and is there a suitable insert before I resort to weld it up and re-tap it?

I'm fairly sure the small drain plug at the bottom of the axle housing is 1/8" National Pipe Thread (NPT)
You may have trouble welding in an area where brazing has been carried out.
Maybe the simplest fix would be to use a short bolt that will take a 1/8" NPT thread, drill and tap the hole to take the bolt then install and cut flush. Or some such variation on the theme.

I need to look through my tap stash for a 1/8. Need to check the hole size, if its too large I can turn me an insert, tap and weld flush.
Thanks for your reply.

Ill back that up. stock drains were 1/8' NPT.

You could drill & tap it to the next size up; no welding over the brass, and you would still have a drain.
