Gloss olive was in use forever for stateside vehicles, but drab finish seems to have appeared mid 1940 arounf the time of Dodge VC / VF production.

Anyone know of any before?

glossy hay
hmmmm.
I know the army had escorts in the inventory untill 1939
but you cant tell from the pics. I wunder if the tops were always white.
I found some tent specs that mention gray canvass,
cant imagine what color that was.
although I'm sure after a few years it was all mud colored.

Not white

I think the white appearance of the canvas was due to sun bleaching more than anything else - nothing more than that.

I'd use a semi-gloss olive on staff cars and trucks 1940 and before, but OD on all trucks from 1941 up.

oh gee
olive gloss, the quartermaster museum says the first official spec was 1916.
but I'v seen green pics dated before that, as well as green canvass.
its really hard to tell the difference between the red white and blue
wagons, and the green ones in black and white photos.
I'v tried to get on some wwI web sites but there focus is on europea
the yankees havent caught the 1oo year aneversery bug yet.
but its coming, the wwI stuff is going through the roof on e-pay.

actually ollive paint goes back to cival war times, you see quite a few gun carrages, in oh gee, as well as ammo crates.
I wunder why it took so long to paint the escorts in o.g.?
