Ambulance markings.

Post by Phil P »

Hi Robbo.
I was intererested to see the photographs of the various WC 54's. A friend of mine has a WC 54 Ambulance in the markings of a US hospital near Birmingham in the UK. The area is called the Pheasey Estate and many of the houses built on it where used by the US Army as the billets prior to D -Day. The hospital was in temporary wooden buildings on nearby fields. The guy with the 54 lives about a mile from the original site. He has done considerable research on the Hospital and the housing estate and the guy's billeted there, and has written a book on the subject. I am not sure if he reads this Forum but I will pass on your web site details.

Hi Robbo thanks for the information. The pictures of the 54s landing in Normanday are intresting. The story I have heard is the the USAAF brought over 54s for thier own use. Just prior to D-Day these were stripped and replaced with English K2 Austin 4x2 ambulances that had a wood and canvas body. the 54s were then allocated to units due to land. I first got into Dodges through a friend who owns a 54 .

Can't join a lot of activities with a Land Rover but for scouting it's a great 4x4! ( see http://www.larostam.nl )
