CCKW Hood side panels help cool

In order for the CCKW engine to cool properly, it is important that the Hood Side Panels be left on in order that the cooling air be dradrawn through the radiator and be ducted over the engine as designed. Without the side panels the cooling air from the fan is allowed to escape before passing over the engine to aid in proper cooling. The Radiator shroud along with the upper and lower radiator core baffles play a part in this also.
In theory, the cooling of the engine is divided in thirds, 1/3 of the cooling is provided by the radiator, 1/3 is provided by the air, and 1/3 is provided by the oil.

Many of us have seen CCKWs and other MVs being operated without the side panels, not a good idea. The TM and several bulletins advise against this.

Operating without the sidepanels, in my experience, also encourages carburettor ice-up in cool & damp, or extra humid conditions.
