trandfer case idler gear bearings
So I have my transfer case apart, the idler gear bearings are shot. How does one remove the bearing cones from the idler, there simply isn't enough space to get a puller on to the bearing.
The shop manual is no help!

Is there access for a sharp chisel to split the cones? That is the only alternative I know of when there is no way to use puller.

Looking at the cross section drawing it suggests that pressing the shaft through the gear would release one end bearing and then allow a puller purchase on the other end.
Assume the shaft is a press fit in the gear?

Captive bearing cups are easy to remove. Take your welder and run a bead around the inside face of the cup. It will cause it to shrink and fall out of the hole. No puller needed.

Yep, the cups are easy, it's the cones I am battling to remove as there is no access behind the cone inner race for any kind of puller.

they make a tool called a bearing splitter. I used to have a ww2 dodge one but gave it away to someone who needed it more. it wedges behind the bearing as you tighten it together. they can still be bought

From what l can remember the outer or cups are the easy part. The cones are something else. The bearing splitter is an easily obtainable bit of kit. in the UK Machine Mart sells them for only a few pounds. I am sure there is an equivalent in NZ. Fit it on the cup and 'simply' draw the offending piece off. Best of luck Ian.

Ian, you answered the question when you looked at the cross section drawing. Use a short piece of bar and press on the end of the shaft with the gear supported in such a way as to allow the shaft to be pushed out of the gear carrying the opposite bearing with it.

just had the same issue myself. I ended up using a bearing remover like this one -

It comes in 2 halves and you assemble it under the cone. You can only get it under the cone on one side as there is some space between the gear and the cone - the other side there was no space. So I removed the one cone and then used a press to push the gear itself away from the second cone so i could use the collar on the other side.
I had tried to push the shaft through both cones and the gear but with only a 10 ton press, there wasnt enough shove to do that.
