Hi folks,
during the restoration of my WC 53 I installed a 2 speed transfer case from a WC 62. I did this because the truck has high ration differentials, and I may well want to go off road from time to time.

I stripped the transfer case and w=found it to be in very good condition, with the exception of a chipped tooth on the high speed end of the idler gear.

Today I ran the vehicle up while on axle stands and the transfer case is quite noisy in hi range. Are these transfer cases usually a noisy beast?

Noticeably noisier and heavier than the single speed case, yes.

You're welcome Ian.

There are just so many more shafts and gears whirling round in there. With a two speed case fitted you won't have to worry about it leaning over in a high wind either - I assume you noticed the weight?

I don't know what you mean about the weight, I installed it with one hand!..... on the jack handle that is :lol: I might just loo for some "Special" oil :mrgreen:

what gear oil are you running? I have only found them noisy in power wagons with the offset differential the lower output is used for rear diff. in a WC53 the energy goes straight through to upper out put. might still make some noise but I have converted a few WC 3/4 tons to 2 speed and didn't notice much difference on the road. Also are you running locking hubs on front axle?

some guys recommend setting them up on the looser side of the specs when rebuilding to reduce noise. I went that route on one rebuild and it worked. only rebuilt a few tho. most of mine didnt need it

Hi Kaegi,
currently using 90 weight gear oil.
Thanks for the tip on the set up, I set it up as close as I could with the factory settings but it should be pretty easy to add a shim here and there to loosen things up.

I haven't actually run it on the road as yet, just up on axle stands, maybe some load on the transmission will sort things out.

Yes, I have free wheel hubs up front, didnt seem to make much difference with the front axle engaged or disengaged.

Is the body touching the frame by the floor pans? That would certainly amplify any noise. Mine was, until I put in taller bushings.

There is no hard and fast delineation in noise levels between single and two speed NP transfer cases in my experience.
I have encountered noisy single speed and quiet two speed units. I have installed a two speed in my WC 57 that is very quiet except at the point of changeover from drive to coast. My WC 63 has a power wagon (1.96:1) T/fer case installed and you wouldn't know it was there.

That's an unusual choice David, normally I hear of PWs being fitted with WC cases to take advantage of the split ratios. What prompted you to fit a PW case?

Hi Adam, there is clearance all around the transfer case so no fouling on the body.

I'm going to reinstall the single speed unit for the time being and will re-set up the 2 speed unit and see how we go.

Hi Gordon
The truck was purchased for me by Peter Grey in 1985. It came from North Devon with the 1.96:1 T/Fer Case installed. I wouldn't know it was from a Power Wagon except that it has the ratio cast on the housing. I have no information as to why it was installed, whether it was considered an upgrade or was available when a replacement was required. Maybe the 1.96:1 unit is more at home in a WC62/63 than in a PW? I am quite happy with it as it works fine and is very quiet.
I might add that when I installed the 2 speed unit in the Command Car I used the PW rubber cushion mounting arrangement. That is certainly an improvement.
