Bent wheel studs

Post by Adam in Wa »

Four of the five, right front, wheel studs were bent; how is this even possible? There was no visible damage to the hub; maybe someone with a big breaker bar?

All I can think of is loose or missing wheel nuts, but then the studs would be damaged as well as bent, and bending four of them would take some doing. Maybe someone lifted the whole truck sharply by just that wheel?

Loose lug nuts will do it.

They can be bent when pressing them out if you are not careful. It's even easier to bend them if you have left the nuts on for thread protection whilst driving them out with a sledge hammer.

Good idea, but they were already bent, that’s why I replaced them... they came out without much effort, and the new ones went in pretty snugly.

Perhaps they had been removed previously to change a brake drum if it is a non-demountable?

the brake drums are floaters. only held on by retaining screws.
