Clutch cover rebuild
Hi All,
It's been a long long time since I posted here, but maybe that's a good thing........it means I haven't had any problems I couldn't overcome Anyway, I took my WC51 off the road at the end of September last year to finally address a problem I've had since I bought the truck, namely drive train noise. In stripping the truck down I've found the two main culprits for the noise, the intermediate drive shaft from the transmission to the transfer case had very worn splines and the Pressure plate baffle in the clutch housing was damaged the last time the transmission was refitted, there were three distinct input shaft shaped dents in the baffle, the fourth attempt at fitting was obviously successful the damaged baffle had been rubbing against the springs on the clutch disc and was nearly worn through in places!
So, I've just rebuilt the clutch housing with an NOS rebuild kit from Jeepest in France. I've followed the TM instructions to the point of fitting "the eye bolts until the top of the nuts and end of the eye bolts are flush" but I'm stuck at the next part "install the rebuilder indicator gage and measure the position of the clutch levers according to the rebuilder manufacturer's directions" and "adjust the release lever up or down by turning the release lever eyebolt nut until the proper setting is obtained"......anybody know what the proper setting is ?
Chris

Re: Clutch cover rebuild
Hi Chris,
good question, I have asked this previously with no luck. I do hope you get a response because neither of us have access to a clutch cover rebuild/adjustment system.
Good luck!

Re: Clutch cover rebuild
As stated in the the engine and clutch manual:
Adjust release levers so that measurement from the ground surface of the flywheel to top of release levers is 1.9375" + or - .031" with .330 steel plate assembled in place of the clutch driving disc.

Re: Clutch cover rebuild
Thank you very much John, that's the one manual I don't have......330 plate I won't be able to get so I'll have to go to the builder's merchants again, my 'rebuilder' was made from 18mm ply and coach bolts and worked fine so hopefully a 9mm ply disc will work also

Re: Clutch cover rebuild
so a 1 15/16" +/- .031" seems kind of sloppy of a tolerance. I would try for tight tolerance. I have never seen a spec for anything on any vehicle with that much wiggle room

Re: Clutch cover rebuild
I'll bear that in mind when I have my second attempt at setting the height. My clutch disc is .360" thick and not .330" that the TM suggests so I've made a .350" disc out of MDF which I'll shim .010" and try again
