Bronze Worm Gear.

Hi all, has anyone replaced the bronze worm/bull gear onto the drum shaft on a MU-2 winch?
I have a new shaft and new gear ready to be pressed onto it, but would like to know if there are any tips on doing this. I know the gear has to be pressed onto the shaft and keys but should the gear slide onto the shaft then be pressed onto the keys or does it have to be pressed all the way? any comments would be welcome.

Should be a press fit all the way. If the shaft is the same diameter from end to end it cannot be otherwise.
This means that you must have the keyway lined up right from the start. Use a straight edge placed against the side of the keys to check for this.
Set the gear so as to achieve correct gap between housing boss and end of clutch keys for installation of thrust/spacer ring.

Thanks for that David,
I've been checking on the web and this site, I've found various references to pressing the gear on but it's always good to find someone who's actually done it. I must admit the lining up of the keyways has been giving me sleepless nights :? and the NOS keys I have are slightly too wide for the slots in the shaft so I will need to reduce their width a little too. I don't know and by no means an expert. But could you heat the gear in the oven to expand it before grinding down to keys?

I had thought of heating the gear to get it on the shaft and lined up with the key a little easier, but think I'll just go with the press. I will need to reduce the width of the key a little to enable it to fit into the keyseat on the shaft.
