T118 Hobart welder engine

I have a T118 engine in my WW2 Hobart 300 amp welder . Is this a 230ci engine ?

Chrysler built so many engines, looking externally the same but internally different.

The T118 is 25 inches (long block) dating from the mid 30's but continued in trucks and industrial use until 1947.

It came in two capacities still called T118 - 228 and 236 cu in - why they would do this is known only unto God and themselves.

The WC12 Weapon Carrier also changed capacity without changing engine number.

I was asking because if I need a new head gasket, the 3 3/8" bore is the usual bore dimension in the early 25" blocks . Yes it seems very odd, why they had two ci sizes for that T118 code is beyond me. Different strokes ?

This particular welder has a AWC ( Allied Works Council ) number on the chassis , I believe it was used in Darwin and possibly on the North South road .

If anybody knows of a manual, it's a TM5 series manual for the HOBART 300 amp welder . These welders are rare these days and having one surviving in Australia is more so.

My garage: Restored Old Henry, and have had this WC51 on the road around 3 years now... Currently finishing a brace of Ben Hur trailers, and starting a 67 Galaxie fastback. Concurrent with the WC I restored a 74 TR6... Oh the joys.

I think the head gasket is the same- the difference is in the crank & rods... They change the throw, and get a little more displacement.

I think that I may have long block head and manifold gaskets here Mike. If I do they are of no use to me as I only have T214, T223 and T245 engines. All of these are 230 Cu In short block.

If you make it to this years club swap day , maybe we could meet up.

You would have seen the welder for sale no doubt . I was fortunate , Bevan had nil interest in it for ages , but after I secured the deal , he said other people suddenly wanted it !

The T118 engine has little compression , maybe stuck valves , not uncommon on these engines .

I had a 1946 Dodge ute for years, fitted with the Canadian long 25" block - 3 3/8" bore 4 1/16" stroke . I did a cheap engine rebuild in 1985 , I discovered that somebody had fitted odd oversize valves to this engine. George Russell, the vintage engine rebuilder told me he'd never seen those large valves in a Dodge engine before. At the time Repco still had their bearing factory in Launceston Tasmania and I got new rod bearings from them, try doing that today. The valves were really a problem because they had been refaced many times , thin heads . I just threw it all back together , it still ran , but without any improvement in performance! I did get new rings from Ralph Provan, remember him ?

G,Day Mike . Hell yes ,i remember Ralph Provan ,Also Allan Provan . Ralph worked for Allan at his Mobil gas garage in Mc Leod many years ago . Ralph started up his own Garage in Maningham Rd, Bullen ,Just over the Yarra . He was there for many years . Probably 50 plus until he retired to Nagambie . Ralph used to go to Bendigo swap meet every year selling Mopar parts . Allan died a couple of years ago down Coloc .Haven,t seen Ralph for a few years . So i don,t know if he is still alive . I will ask his niece Lynett if he is still alive when i ring her again . Ray

That well used Dodge WC master parts book ( the one I scanned ) , I eventually sold the book to you. That book was purchased from Ralph Provan , he had it at the Lilydale swap meet on his table , around 1980 . Small world !
