VC Engine Dating

Post by Gordon_M »

A while back I bought a proper T202 engine for my VC 3 that had been stripped from another VC 3.

Just got round to looking at the serials and codes.

Engine code is T202-4988
Block is 1-16-40
Head is 12-14

So, head cast 14th December 1939, block cast 16th January 1940, and yet it is nearly 5000 into VC engine production?

Thoughts ?

Hi Gordon
Either the engine had been replaced sometime in its military life,
Or Like Willys engines first in last out, last in first out, of where ever Dodge stored the engine.
Nice early motor though :D

post / add a link on the vc vf spread sheet page,, and track the numbers, there should be a pattern, that would develop,, like Mb jeeps,, there were never a matching jeep/motor combo,, but t there is a range,, that makes it correct,

GPW all were matching numbered motor/frame/tags,,

good luck on getting walley to dig threw his treasures

if the block is Engine code is T202-4988 Block is 1-16-40 were does it fall in you vc list,, or may fall,, with the head data,, you could see if the head was replaced,, i have a vc block out side,, i'll check(came with vc3 from craig Johnson)

Well the block has the date code under the distributor, date code for the head is normally in the middle somewhere, and I've since been reminded that the bellhousings are also dated on the left front face, visible under the throttle linkage.

All the dates I have for VC and VF stuff are January / August 1940. Unlike other engine codes, like the T214 series, the T202 and T203 codes were only used that year, so if you have day and month you don't have to guess the year. Presumably there are some equivalent / extra civilian T203 engines ( they made export versions too ... )

I see 4-30 in that image, 30th April 1940 then ?

As I said above for T202 and T203 engine components they only ran from September '39 to August '40, with the majority of the production being Easter-August 1940, so you don't actually need the year to date them.

Hi
Here are the numbers from my 2
the first one is in a Fire Chief tractor
T202 10644
Under the dist

Second is
T202-4?34 over stamped with 7-2-4
on side of block
A
1-19-40
860129-14

Very different numbers on the block, i am confused as the stampings are very different

I've never bothered to look at the casting numbers Jeff, I wouldn't think they were that significant, but not sure. The 'casting number' is usually just assigned to each engineering code, with a suffix indicating which pattern it was of the bunch. If your production quantity was relatively low there may only have been one or two patterns used for each engineering code, and some of those patterns would almost certainly have been the previous years patterns with slight repairs and alterations for the updated engine specifications.

VC / T202 and VF / T203 are quite interesting engineering codes.

As far as I know the T202 code was only used for the military 4 x 4 VC, so any engine with a T202 code came from a military VC half ton...

I know the T203 code was used for VF 4 x 4 production for the US Army, and at least one batch of VF production for export, which I think was run right at the end of US VF production. I seem to remember that they also ran some VF 4 x 2 trucks which may or may not have had a T203 code and could have been military, civilian, or both. It is a similar situation to the T110 engineering code which we all associate with the Canadian Dodge D60 3 ton 4 x 2 trucks, but was also used as a code for civilian 3 tons I think.

these blocks have differansce all over them,, for being such a LOW production motor,, why would we see,
2 casting numbers
1119729-16
860129-14

also the dating on the blocks, under dist.. come in at least 3 forms.
example:
1.) 15
2.) 1-19-40- (full write out of year)(ernies)
and
3.) 8-13
versions......

interesting topic,,

Re: VC Engine Dating

Post by 68427vette »

how would we date ernie motor:

T202 10644
Under the dist
837
15
1119729-16

if 15 is jan 5th?? his number T202- 10644, is way off..

unless the NUMBER T207-XXXXX, were stamped as they were put in!! and the casting date of 15, would just be a stock pile of motors, waiting to be installed.. then stamped T202-XXXX. So,, dating a block , has no meaning to the T202-XXX number.??????????

are we confident to say that 15, is JAN 5th, 1940?

MY vc1 texas truck has

my motor is from the Texas truck VC1
T202 3987
date M 15
http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab23 ... ORS023.jpg

ernie do you have an "M" also -just more questions...

is it also 15(date), or jan 15th 1940??? T202-3987(mine) (10644)ernie) have the same casting date, yet !!!! 6657 off (more that all the vc production, odd)

we need a spread sheet....????
