CCKW SPLIT/BANJO - DIFFERENTIAL/WHEEL BEARINGS

Post by RANGER »

Just a little tidbit here, as there is an interesting type of bearing used that is found on Banjo axle CCKWs and not on Split axle CCKWs. The bearings used ao the Rear Wheel and Differential Carrier Bearings of the Banjo axled CCKW are called "Barrel Bearings", a close look at them and you'll note that the rollers are shaped like mineature barrels or beer kegs. They are unlike the Tapered Roller Bearings found on the Front Wheels both CCKW types and on the Rear Axles and Differential Carrier Bearings of the Split Axle CCKWs.
Barrel Bearings are a New Departure-Hyatt design unique to GM products of the 30s-40s. (ND-Hyatt is a GM subsidiary)

Barrel bearings are also found in the CCKW Saginaw steering gears.

Some local parts store personell may be baffled when you try to order them.
I do not have that problem and help keep fellow CCKW owners supplied with them.
They are not kept as stock at the popular parts franchises, and may be easier to find in some European locations where the CCKW was most recently used.

Don't forget to check for pits. I still have a few on the shelf with correct NOS Seals.
NOTE: You may want to check your backing plate attaching bolts are secure, the one on the upper left of the pic appears a bit short.

A couple months ago I saw a post where a person installed new Banjo rear seals, that he had matched up at NAPA, and remarked that his brake shoes got all greasy afterwards. He also posted the NAPA part number for all to use, guess what? It was not the right seal to use. I hope no one used his numbers for their truck.
Your friendly surplus dealer with years of experience will not let that happen to you.
Experience counts, and doing it right the first time is cheaper in the long run.
NOTE:
Be careful, I have noticed on some well meaning web sites with conversion charts to NAPA part numbers, some some of the numbers posted can be confusing when dealing with, for example, Chev 4X4 and CCKW Banjo rear wheel bearings..
It is best to seek out experienced Army Truck Parts specialists, you will save time and money.
