CCKW IS 66 YEARS OLD, GOING ON 70

Post by RANGER »

The CCKWX was in production at the end of 1940.

Stock up on spare parts, they will not be available much longer.
I have at least one of everything on my CCKW that moves or wears, and some NOS sheetmetal in case of accident damage. It has taken me 40 years to gather these parts. The next 40 will not be as easy.

Ranger's reminder about the decreasing supply of NOS parts raises an interesting philosophical question ie., when do spare parts cease being just parts and become collectible items themselves.

I know of some rabid jeep collectors who have glass cases displaying their Ford parts in the original packaging. They would never think of using these parts.

Of course the ultimate dilemma would be to find a NOS vehicle in its shipping crate. What would you do - admire it as an extremely rare historical artifact in its own right or go ahead and assemble it.

A more common scenario is the crated engine - if you needed a new engine, would you actually use a scarce new WW2-crated engine when you could get an old one rebuilt using modern parts.

It didn't matter when there were plenty of parts around but the supply is diminishing every day as warehouses and old-time businesses close and dump old slow-moving stock.

What would you do with the SUP GMC in that old barn??

Interesting take on the evolution of the antique Army trucks. Reality has to be considered tho as the CCKW has more good years in its past than it has in its future. Remember, we started with 562,000 and plenty of spares, and now there are considerably less of both.
