CCKW WOOD STEERING WHEEL CARE

Post by RANGER »

The CCKW and Chevrolet 4X4 wooden steering wheels were originally painted Olive Drab. Many owners prefer the natural wood color. To protect the wood, it is a good idea to rub a couple of coats of Raw Linseed Oil on the exposed wood. It is best to do this on warm days, let it soak an hour ot two and wipe off the excess. Raw Linseed Oil suggested as it penetrates the wood better than the Boiled Linseed Oil. Twicea year should be sufficient.
In addition to preserving the wood, it gives it a rich color and enhances the grain.
If your Steering Wheel has not been installed, it is a good idea to run an 8-32 BOTTOMING TAP thru the threaded holes for the Horn Button Retaining Ring (Wood Steering Wheels only)

NOTE:
I practice all that I preach, and the result is a happy CCKW.

Your Wood Steering Wheel is an investment, linseed oil treatment is a must.
Ray Linseed Oil has the best penetration.

It is best not to paint the wood steering wheel, it must be bare in order to treat and preserve with Linseed Oil.
