CCKW-Chevrolet 4X4 front wheels

Post by RANGER »

They left the factory(all 562,000) with the same Inner/Outer Nuts as used on the rear wheels. Wheels do wear out, especially when the nuts are not keop tight. The holes then become oversize and lose the precision champhered edge. The nuts will not effectively hold the wheels in place, and the wheels should be discarded. There are those who claim the holes in their wheels are a poor design and never should have the rear nuts used on the front, and recommend that conventional nuts be used instead. They do this because the Inner nuts will screw all the way thru their wheel. What happens is that the beveled edge of the conventional nuts do not mate with the hole and there is just six little points of the nut contacting the wheel. Do not follow this practice, it is dumb, it is unsafe.
Check your wheel nuts regularly. There is no compromise for safety.

When repairing and changing tires, especially when installing a new set which will last for years, it is a good idea to sandblast, prime and paint the wheels to minimize rust buildup which may compromise wheel safety.

Some wheel nuts look better than others, the inner/outer nuts made by Budd have good original appearance. Most CCKWs and G-506 trucks will have a mixture of brands, especially if it has gone thru depot rebuilds and reissue.
