To conserve on steel. The wood cargo body was inferior to steel and weighed more. Later on in 1944, the Steel Composite body was proposed, and E.G. Budd Mfg Co was given the contract to prepare drawings for composite cargo bodies.
The steel used in the manufacture of the composites eas of lighter guage than that used on the original all steel cargo body, but was found to be sufficient.
