GM Ambulance Brushguard?

Post by Robbo »

Take a look at the mystery brushguard on the Dodge section of this forum under WC52 Navy Numbers.

It matches a picture of one on a 1939/40 GM? 4x2 1-1/2 ton ambulance - I can't find any reference to GM ambulances in my references - anyone know more about these.

A bit more digging reveals there were such machines:

Must be a pretty rare beast nowadays.

The brush guard is the pre-war Chevrolet guard and is identical to the one on a 1940 military 1 1/2 ton flatbed Chevy mv that I have seen and touched. It also matches the guards in the photos of a '37 1 1/2 ton cargo truck and a '38 Chevy Suburban that I have.

Thanks Mike - I guess they used them up to about 1940 on a lot of vehicles.

Agreed, they seemed to die out on the civvy bodied trucks once the 'tactical' trucks came out in 41-42 although there were some GMC COE and Macks that still used them.
