CCKW Changeover to negative ground (earth)

Post by RANGER »

The CCKWX and early CCKWs up to around 1942 had the Positive Battery Post Grounded to the Chassis . The change was made to a negative grounded systen as the Radios used in Army Vehicles were Negative Ground. In order to standardize the CCKW was changed to a Negative grounded system on the production line. Generally the Positive Grounded CCKWs were not changed over to Negative Ground except at the time of a Rebuild at the Ordnance Shops.

There was a question pertaining to whether an owners' CCKW was Positive or Negative Ground. Best way to determine that is to check the ID plate on the Regulator, it will tell you, and the part number stamped on the ID Plate can be looked up in the SNL to also confirm it. A easy way to do a quick check is to note the size of the opening in the used Battery Cable Clamps, the one that was on the Positive+ post will have a larger opening.

Another professional quality CCKW tip from 'ol RANGER here.
