CCKW/CHEVROLET 4X4 STEERING WHEELS

Post by RANGER »

There were only two types, Hard Rubber with OD finish, and the ever popular Wooden Wheel that came with at least 3 types of spokes. After years of use or being driven with sweaty grimy hands the OD finish of the hard rubber wheel would wear off leaving the black rubber exposed. A lit of CCKW Drivers with big bellies have a signature black horizontal mark on their shirts due to the rubber. This was not apparant during the war as GIs were "lean and mean," right? There is picture on the web of a 300#+ CCKW Driver seated beside his truck, that must be one tight fit.

The Wooden Steering Wheel was painted, but we all like them natural wood, don't we? I rub a little raw linseed oil on mine once a year, raw is best as it is thinner and soaks in easier.

There are more owners looking for steering wheels than there are steering wheels to be found. The law of supply and demand has esculated CCKW Steering Wheels into selling for more than some want to invest in a running CCKW.
