DUKW almost finished

Post by Minnhawk »

Below is a picture or two of my DUKW -- I say I am almost finished, but since when is ANY historic military vehicle "finished"? There's always more work to be done, but at least this DUKW is getting to the point where I'm willing to post pictures of it! I purposely left off the skirts on the left side to show off her "legs" (!)

DUKW

John,
Your DUKW looks pretty darn nice! What else do you have to do to "finish" it? Thise rope fenders look very familiar!

That is so nice! I can't imagine the work it takes to get a vehicle to a condition as nice as you guys do with these large machines.
But, where is the canvas water bucket on the jeep can?
Just kidding. Wonderful truck! Steve K.

Labor of Love

Post by Minnhawk »

Actually, most DUKW owners have a love/hate relationship with their beasts. As I've told my jeep-owning buddies, hey, after you've restore a DUKW, everything else looks tiny, easy, and simple in comparison. I spent nearly a week inside the rear hull area blasting, cleaning, priming and painting -- imagine being totally inside your HMV......

Steve G: Well, I am going to install a new plywood deck, clean the hull under the main body, paint that, then turn the engine compartment white, and that should about do it. I agree, the bumpers DO look very familiar, but definitely "Make" a DUKW a DUKW. Thanks again for your help and advice.......

DUKW & Water Bucket

Post by Steve Greenberg »

Steve K,
If you look close you can see the water bucket on one of the 5 gallon gas cans. Just over the drivers right shoulder! I guess I have around $680 worth of canvas water buckets on my DUKW!

The bucket thing is kind of nutty isn't it. Looks like Minnhawk will have to have one now. This should make Ranger happy!
What a fun ride in the DUKW, I am envious. Steve K.

Steve G:

Where's the .50 for that? Ya need to be able to repel any unwanted borders. Oh yeah, then ya need to hang a water bucket and web straps off of it too. I'm so jealous, I've always wanted to drive one of them off a beach into the water.

Steve G:

GO AHEAD, RUB IT IN. :P  There's a thing in 07 I think, in Indiana with an LST and all kinds of ampha vehicles that I'd love to attend if I get the Beast all together.

dukw

Post by martylee »

Wow, those dukws really look nice. good job guys! it's too big, too rare, to complicated for me, but these days I don't see anyhting that looks more cool than the dukw.

It's also a lot of fun seeing that you use them in the winter as well. As for the pics of the dukw in rainy/ windy weather, I don't know how much they can take, but it looks like it can a lot.

Thanks again for sharing!
