How much oil for a 1945 Chevy 1 1/2 Ton 235 engine?

Post by darog »

Hey Guys,
I must be a dipstick or something. I have owned my 1945 Chevy 1 1/2 ton Cargo truck with the original 235 engine for about 1 month. I decided to service it for winter. Check Coolant and change the oil and filter element. All went well until I checked the dipstick after I refilled the engine with oil. The oil did not indicate on the dipstick. The book calls for 5 qts in crankcase and 1.5 qts in large oil filter mounted on the dash, I KNOW I poured in 5 qts and the 1.5 qts. ( I even "flushed the oil pan" with about 1/4 quart of clean oil before reinstalling the drain plug). I started the engine and I have oil pressure. The engine runs fine. Why don't I get a indication on my engine oil dipstick? I poured 2 MORE quarts in and still no indication! What is up with that?
Thanks, Roger in Indiana

It is quite possible your dipstick does not match your oil pan depth, it may be for an engine with a shallow pan. Have you compared it to illustrations in your TM or parts manual? how long is the portion that is in the tube, measuring from the shoulder or stop?

Hello,
I wondered about my dipstick "correctness" as well.
The dipstick measures at an overall length of 21 1/2 inches tip to the finger curled top end.
The dipstick measures 15 and 1/8 inches from tip to the shoulder or stop. It appears to be original. Can anyone please measure thier dipstick for me to compare with?
Thanks again for your help,
Roger

Well I just looked into my ORD 9 parts book for G-506. On page 65 it indicates that TWO diffierent dipstick (Rod) may be used. The book calls it the oil level gauge Rod. My S/N for this truck is 8NJ38-15382. The NN, NX YN trucks use a different Rod. I think those are the COE trucks. No measurements of either Rod are mentioned in this parts book. So I don't know which Rod that I have. My TM9-805 does not help me on this issue either.
I need a measurement from someone else.
Thanks, Rogrer

I have not measured the oil pan. It appears to look just like the engine photos that I am looking at in the parts book and the TM9-805 book. I don't think the oil pan has been replaced with a different one.
I think a need another dipstick measurement from another forum member. Can anybody help me out?
Thanks,
Roger
