If you are using the original 4# WWII Type Cap you need the gasket, as these caps have no rubber seal to contact the shoulder at the bottom of the neck. If you are using a Civilian or later "M-Series" Cap, with the rubber seal, carefully remove the fibre gasket from the neck and save it as they are not that common at dealers.
I find that the tip of my pockrt knife blade is the easiest tool to carefully pry the edge of the gasket with minimum damage.
The original WWII Caps work just fine, and will give no problems as long as the fibre gasket is inplace.
