CCKW 270 IS A HEAVY DUTY ENGINE

Post by RANGER »

In the 40s thru early 50s GM trucks were powered by in line 6 Cylinder engines. In the light thru medium range size of GM trucks GMC and Chevrolet offered similar looking trucks as far as sheet metal was concerned. What was under the hood, the suspension and powertrain is what made GMC different from its Chevrolet cousin. Chevrolet trucks offered the 216 and 235 CID engine with babbited rods and a splash type lubrication system, GMC offered the 222, 248, 256, and 270 engine with full pressure lubrication, and rods that had insert bearings. GMC was the heavy duty version of the trucks offered by Chevrolet. The GMC engine was more powerful and durable. There are those who want to claim that the 270 was not a heavy duty truck engine, but they have not done their homework and are comparing 2006 technology vs 1940s technology. They are mistaken in their logic. There are some of us who were around and still remember. Having a GMC back then instead of a Chevrolet Truck was like having frosting on a cake.
