bearings in steering box

Post by Gregory »

I posted this in the old forum and am reposting in the new forum.

I just purchased a 1945 1.5 ton Chevy with a GMC 270. The bottom bearing in the steering box has been ground into almost unrecognizable pieces. Are the top and bottom bearings the same and does anybody know what the part number is for these bearings? Also, is the botton of the steering shaft supposed to be flat or tapered in? I have a feeling the inner portion of the bearing has welded itself to the shaft. Any help is appreciated.

As far as I know, your box is the same as the earlier cckw (later version had larger diameter pitman shaft). Assuming it is, your bearing cups are Hyatt 10983-Z ; your cones are Hyatt 10983-R. Same top & bottom. The inner race surfaces are ground into the worm shaft & are a concave shape.
I think I had trouble finding any of these bearings for my truck & used good second hand ones. Good luck!
