Strip Bolts for Wc 51, 52, 62, 63

Post by Airborne Bob »

I seem to be confused as to the correct bolts, I have read that step bolts are correct, but my TM 10-1530 under Group 1802 part number 126373(bolt 5/16 - 18 x 1 1/2 amount needed 51.
In Group 2304 idenifies part number 126376 as round head carriage bolt (5/16-18x1 1/2- cad amount 53.
In Group 2304 step bolt, part number 128444 5/16-18x 1 3/4 Parkerized amount needed 8.
I'am ready to put the bed back in myWC52, this truck returned from Greece and I tok every bolt off and have it up and runing and the bed was in very good shape and the bolts in it were carrage bolts as noted in TM 10-1530. The boards could go back I will replace them. The strips had some holes and I repaired the with J.B.Weld and it worked very good. Also I have not been able to find 1" oak boards as the 1" boards today are only 3/4" and this makes a differance on the length of the bolts. I look at this web sight eveery day and have found some very good advice. Looking for coments. Bob

If you have the original strips, the bolts that were in them were step bolts. The manuals seem to all list them as carriage bolts. The head of the step bolt is larger in diameter and flatter. They were called step bolts as they were used to bolt stair treads where the higher head of the carriage bolts would cause a tripping hazard.

One inch (nominal) finished oak should measure 13/16" in thickness. In restoring a wooden 1-ton trailer, I purchased unfinished 1" oak and planed it to 13/16".

I have purchased step bolts in boxes of 100 for a reasonable price so I wouldn't worry about an exact count. You probably will not find plated or parkerized bolts. If you want that finish, you will need to have plain bolts plated or parkerized.
