Dodge Ring and Pinion wanted

Post by Lang »

I am trying to find two ring and pinion sets from a Dodge WD20 or 21, VD 20 or 21 early 1940's

Part numbers I have are Ring and pinion set 857510 Ring alone 857508 Pinion alone 857509

Ratio is 4.3:1 (43/10 teeth)

I believe the unit from the 1946-47 WD20, 21 and the B-DU, B-1,2,3-D may fit also
Ring and Pinion 1189865 Ring alone 11889822 Pinion alone 1189826

Ratio 4.3:1 (43/10 teeth)

There may well be other MOPAR or aftermarket numbers and other vehicles that used these 8 3/4 ring gears.

Hello Lang,
Those Ring and Pinion sets along with the 4.10 and 3.91 sets are darn near extinct. I was able to pick up an NOS 4.30 set on E-bay about 7-8 years ago. Your best bet would be to find two complete third members and hope the R&P are in serviceable condition. Post-war 8.75” third members have a different size spline on the side gears and 2 more pinion gears in the case than the pre-war units. If your going to use those in a 1/2 ton WC, you will need to find axle shafts or do what I did. I installed side gears from a 1/2 ton WC into a post-war third member unit and installed that in the front axle housing. That way, I is was able to use the Rzeppa CV joints. I then installed a set of B1D Pilothouse axle shafts in the rear post-war third member. I had to cut about an 1/8 or 1/4” off the splines of the axle shafts as they were a bit too long. It all worked out great. I have a set of PowerGiant 4.10 third members that I am planning on installing in the WC and along with those, returning to the 750-16’s vs the 900-16’s I now have on the truck. Good luck in your search.

Joe

Thank you for that information. I will try a bit longer to find the R&P units from the WD20. Just a bolt on fit would be a great solution.

I do not want to go to the 9.00 tires because, in my opinion, it completely ruins the ride and handling of the 1/2 ton truck - although they look pretty cool!

I have printed your solution in case I have to go that way.
