An owner and a torch
I hate throwing anything away, but is there a chance that this spare tire support can be repaired either through brazing or welding up this cast metal? First to figure out if it's cast IRON vs. cast STEEL. Brazing a chunk of steel to get back to it's ability to support wheel weight?
Why do these guys do this??

Its very unlikely to be cast iron as this material does not have high tensile strength. Its more likely to be cast steel which you can effectively arc weld with E7018 low hydrogen electrodes (or the mig/tig equivalents).
Personally I would dowel the support and then finish weld. Done well it would be as good as new.

Ian, are you saying that you would drill a hole into the support, weld a pin into it, then weld a vertical bar of steel to that pin? I do not have the remainder of the support if you meant to re-attach the missing support arm.Personally I would dowel the support and then finish weld

To remove it properly without cutting you have to remove the running board and the four bolts. I think some people are just too lazy.
I've seen this before on WC 53 Carryalls, and I vaguely remember that the Chevrolet 1.5 ton Panel Van conversion to K51 involved just gas axing similar brackets.

Hi Pareo,
sorry my bad, I assumed you had the rest of the spare wheel support and was suggesting doweling and welding:oops:

Unbolt and discard the remains and invest in a repro from Midwest Military or advertise for an original on whatever forums you take part in. You will also need the retainer plate.

To piggyback on the original question- when utilizing the spare tire carrier, do all of you guys use the spare tire crossmember as well? Prior owner sh*t canned that as well...

Re: An owner and a torch
if you are going to put the spare on the carrier then xmember is needed to help support the frame.

Re: An owner and a torch
I think I would install the spare wheel cross-member even if there was no carrier fitted.

I would too. even the trucks without the spare in that spot run the crossmember.June J wrote:I think I would install the spare wheel cross-member even if there was no carrier fitted.
