WC-54 Windshield posts

Post by Wc-51OHA »

What is the correct covering for the interior windshield posts on a WC-54? Mine was a French rebuild from the mid 60's and had a tan colored naugahyde. Pictures?

G,Day mate . On my wc53 i used the same material as the roof lining { On the A pillar }. We call it nelson board down here . My ambo has a steel interior roof liner . But i will probably go with the nelson board . Never heard of naugahyde .Nelson board is about 2-3 mill [1/8 in } thick . I would go with Black or a mllitary green colour . I suspect that not many people would know the original colour .. Ray

My garage: Restored Old Henry, and have had this WC51 on the road around 3 years now... Currently finishing a brace of Ben Hur trailers, and starting a 67 Galaxie fastback. Concurrent with the WC I restored a 74 TR6... Oh the joys.

Naugahyde is a type of vinyl...

Thanks Ray! I'm guessing that Nelson board would be what we call Masonite, which would be what was used for the ambulance interior walls.

G,Day again . Yes, it is like Masonite ,but a lot thinner. The Nelson board that i used on my interior roof of the wc53 has a black wrinkled finish . I used the left over bits to make up the covers for the " A" pillar. Ray

I have seen many unrestored (Norway) WC54's with canvas with edge trimming. Not sure if this is original, but it looks like it might be.

The original WC12 I have has the cardboard (or nelson board Ray calls it) the same as my original WC53 Carryall had.

It is not masonite which is a compressed wood product used in sheet applications such as wall lining and not flexible enough to do tight curves in cabs.

The board is readily available here and has a rear cardboard appearance and a front shiny leather grain look as Ray described. It will bend pretty well but will crack if bent very sharp.Normally comes in black or white but I have seen it in brown and green but does not matter as it paints very easily. My original WC12 cab lining (including door pillar strips) are dark brown as are my WC53 strips above the rear windows and remnants in the cab

Lots of 40/50/60 commercial vehicles used it as cab roof lining.

Of course Vintage Power Wagons and others have complete pre-cut roof lining kits.

Yes Chris

That is the exact surface finish on the original interior cardboard on my WC12. The colour on mine is a dark or chocolate brown.

OK, I've searched the internet for Millboard and it always takes me back to the UK, which Woolies states international shipping is "iffy". Can anyone tell me what this is called here in the USA? I've searched vehicle interior suppliers and can't find anything that looks like Millboard/Nelson board.

The Millboard I posted is a fibreboard, like a thick, dense, cardboard or hardboard. It wouldn't be for sale here in the U.K. if it had asbestos in it. I'm sorry but I don't know the U.S. equivalent.
I could give them a call if anyone wanted to see if I can find out if it's available in the U.S. or if they could ship it.

Cheers,
Chris.
