Lazybacks

Post by M29C3284 »

Hello everyone this is my first post on this forum. I bought a running WC 52 a year ago and drove it quite a lot last year, managed a little over 400 km. It's an ex Norwegian army dodge and from what I can tell it has never been restored after it left the army, only been kept running. I plan to restore it, but I have a two projects that I would like to finish before I start on the Dodge.

In the mean time there are a few things I would like to fix, the lazybacks is one. Bellow is two pictures of the lazybacks that are installed now.

Anybody knows if any of these are the correct type for my cargo boxes? The cargo boxes is the all steel type with the lazyback supports.

Also, here is a picture of the different types of lazybacks that I got.

From what I have read the one to the left is the first type. I think the wood on this one is original, but the cut outs are missing. Anybody knows is this is correct? I have placed a board with cut outs next to it for comparison.
Was there two types of this lazyback? One early one with the cut outs and large spacing between the hinges for the bodies without lazyback supports, and one without the cut outs and smaller spacing between the hinges, for the bodies with lazyback supports?

The one in the middle of the picture is the one installed on the left side one my Dodge. Anybody seen this type before? The shape of the hinges is a bit odd, and it doesn't really fit perfectly when upright.

The one to the right is the last type for the composite body.

I found an early picture of a WC-51 in the book "Dodge Military Vehicles" by Brooklands Books and it shows the cut-outs that you refer to.

It's on page 17 and looks to be pictures of a comparison to the half-ton. Same soldier is in several pictures and in one he is lifting up the seat bottom and you can clearly see the cut-outs on the last backs.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I don't own that book so I can't check the picture you are referring to.

Big thanks to BrianT for providing me with picture from the Brooklands book.

Here are my thoughts on this. The -42 and early -43's used the lazybacks with cut outs for the holes in the lazyback hinges. And then they changed to the type without cut outs when the lazyback supports was introduced in mid -43, though the hinges where still the same as before. Just that now the holes were covered. And then in -44 with the introduction of the composite body the holes in the hinges was removed and slight bent at the base was also removed. As the seat was no longer used, so the lazyback could lay flat when folded down.

But then there is a catch. As none the lazybacks that I have that doesn't have cut outs and have holes in the top of the hinges, has any holes for the lazyback supports.

Does anybody know what type of lazybacks my dodge should have? My dodge is built in July or August of -43.
