Calling Ranger, or anybody else interested in Studebaker 6X6

I know what a US 6 is, but what is a US 6 62?

Various versions of the Studebaker were given model numbers such as US6-U4 or US6-U6 but I have never heard of the term you mention - maybe we can work it out from the context in which it is used.

That is direct from the data plate. I couldn't find it on the web, from several Studebaker truck sites, so I was hoping for a find here. Thanks for the replies. I will investigate further to make sure I wasn't reading it wrong.

US6 U2 is a SWB.
US U12 is 148" WB
Just what plate are you getting this from? Where is it located , and what other information is on the plate? There are Name Plates, Caurion Plates, Cab Plates, Publication Data Plates, Car Serial Number Plates
What is the Wheelbase? It it 148" or 162"
There are numbers after the "Makeand Model" on the Name Plates, but it usually has the type of chassis, (cargo, dump, etc.).I did find reference to a US6-48 (DUMP) and a US 6X4-46 Tractor. I do not have the operators manual that may solve the question.

This came from the main data plate in the cab, the one with weights, specs, same as most manufacturers- the plate is stamped in the space after "Model" US 6 62. The truck was purchased surplus by owner after WWII, and now has a hoist on the rear. It does have a front winch. I have to get back to it and have another look. Thanks for the info.

By the way, I found this Russian site which talks about Studebakers. The Russians called them "Studer." It has a bunch of marks listed, but no 62.

I think that the 62 or 48 may be a shorthand reference to the wheelbase ie 162 or 148 as this German site suggests the 62 is the same as the LWB U3 model:

Also that Russian site mentions the US6-62 & 48 in the top line heading.

So I guess that is how Studebaker referred to LWB or SWB models like the CCKW 352 or 353 designations.

What about the "46" I quoted from a data plate?.

Maybe some of the tractor/prime mover versions used a 2" shorter wheelbase ie 146" but that's just a guess.

No guessing allowed. The US 6 only lists parts for 162 and 148" WB tho. This will generate something to talk about and keep some out of trouble.
There will be more involved in this than there are Studebakers.

I have a friend who has four Studebaker US6 trucks, and we believe there may only be ten in exsistence in The UK. One of his trucks is probably unique being an open cabbed version, and maybe the only one in the world.

I tried to post a picture of the open cabbed studebaker last night but it didn't work, but I will try again, keep watching! It is not for sale, but we are allways interested to hear from other people who are interested in studebakers.

I seem to remember an open-cab Studebaker pictured in an early Wheels & Tracks magazine with the caption saying it was manufactured from a Jimmy open cab. Any chance that this is it?
