STRATA BLUE

Am being bitten by the USAF Bug again, and will be selecting one of my vehicles to repaint in USAF 50s -60 period. CCKW is out, but the M-38A1 that I built from 100% NOS parts is tempting.
I grew up in 40s-60s at Main Gate to Dow Field and witnessed the evolution of color and markings, as we also sold parts to and serviced vehicles for the USAF. There was quite a mixture of OD and Strata Blue beginning in 1950 as the activity during the Korean in Strata Blue. DOW AFB had both Yellow and OD WWII Trucks and Yellow M-38 Jeeps.

My '53 M-38A1 is an USAF jeep. The topcoat is OD, but strata blue is still visible on the undersides of wheel wells. It has some interesting stencils on it, numbers on all five wheels, and an 'NCG' point marked. I haven't decided if it will go back SB or OD, but that is a future decision.

I have seen the following original paint vehicles in strata blue. One thing to remember is that a number of Office of Civil Defense (OCD) vehicles were also painted in that color, as well as some Civil Air Patrol (CAP) vehicles. In the last 28 years, I have seen:

REO SOV (crash truck)
Dodge M43
Dodge M37
Dodge WC51
Dodge WC54
Willys MB
Ford GPW
GMC CCKW
GMC M211
International M5H6
Reo M34
Kaiser M35
Ford GTB
Ford M-8 Armored Car

CAP did not always use the same shade of blue though.
