In the latest issue (Nov/Dec 07) of Vintage Truck magazine, there is a picture of a civilian-constructed wrecker made from a war surplus US6 Studebaker "built up from a packing case" and a cut down war surplus Trackson CT9 ordnance crane - It demonstrates the ingenuity of post war civilian users of this surplus material - unfortunately, the design had some shortcomings illustrated by the photo as approx 6 men are standing on the front mudguards and bumper bar trying to keep the front wheels on the ground and failing.
The CT9 crane would have been unsuitable as well because of limited lifting capability and the winches ran at too high a speed. He would have been better off buying a surplus M1 or Diamond T wrecker if available.
There was similar setup on a GMC CCKW in a scrap metal yard near here until recent times.
