Hi folks,
I'm sure many of you curse the old style small mouth filler necks on the early WC's, I know I do, particularly on my old WC 57 and I know I will on the WC 53. I was considering drilling a hole into the cast elbow that the filler connection hose goes on to, then running a breather line up to the upper part of the filler neck to allow the trapped air to escape. Has anyone done this or something similar, and if so, how successful was your modification?

the problem is that, when filling the fuel tank, the fuel flowing down the small filler neck does not allow the air to escape from the tank. This causes the air in the tank to compress and then blows back out of the filler causing fuel to spill from the filler. Because of this you have to fill the fuel tank very slowly and this can be a real problem in a busy fueling station.

I have been plagued by this problem also.

My previous WC53 could actually hold fuel in the neck giving the appearance of full but only having 3/4 tank. Blowback on that and my current WC53 ensured you got fuel over your boots nearly every time.

I bent a length of 1/4 ID copper tube (1/2 would be better) to slide in the filler so it sat up at the top of the tank inside. The outer end I seated with Devcon about2 inches down from the cap. Worked great but because it bowed down from inside the top of tank then up into filler, fuel pooled in the tube and the first blowback spat the trapped fuel out like a water pistol (over my boots).

Problem solved by putting as tight a 180 degree bend as possible at the top and directing the first clearing spit downwards into the tank.

For my WC-12 I put an air vent in the top of the tank running to a hole in the filler near the top - works perfectly.

sounds like the way to go. I developed the "fill the Dodge" stance with my command car, always standing off to one side while filling. I sure wouldn't want to try to refuel under fire
