Re: My new DODGE WC-51 '43
Hello all;
Some more updates on the work on the dodge...
Did some more work on the crossmember :
Instead of using huckbolts i welded in bolts
this is how they look in the end...you have to get really close to tell they arent huckbolts
I also put a welt on them so they don't get loose from shacking of the frame etc...
gave the crossmember an extra anti rust coating :
crossmember in the frame and frame pieces welded back in place :
Needs some more grinding here and there
The rivet heads and rivets are finally ready
The rivet tool works flawless...but my timing and i didn't drill the holes big enough to cope with the expansion of the rivet when it's red hot made the first rivet attempt a bit of a bummer ...BUT we are getting there and when i have the time i will make a movie of the 2nd attempt
Rear axle is 90% complete and ready for it's layer of OD paint :
that's all for the moment ...
greetz,
davy

Oh my god - wheel brake cylinders in matching colors???
Neverever before seen something like that on a vehicle with brake drums!
- Don't you think that's "a bit to much"?
Maybe on a vehicle with disc brakes it's a nice "show & shine effect" to paint the brake caliper in some shiny black, red, or yellow...
But if they "disappear" behind a closed brake drum + a wheel?
...Or do you take off the wheels and brake drums lateron for the jury on a vintage vehicle show to make sure that you get the 1st prize for the best restauration in every case?
What about adding then "fold down mirrors" under the running boards to support the jury?
Nice job in every case - but don't get "lost in the details" my friend: 6.6.2014 is coming closer each day!

simpel answer my friend...
The brake cilinders were disassembled for a complete overhaul; So i had the chance to spray them with the rest ...one piece less that can rust!

That's true.
I only wonder if the paint will last if you have to fit a repair kit in the future (contact with brake fluid) or - as a more common thing - if you use Break-Cleaner to get the dust out?
- Both fluids are quite agressive.
Anyhow: if your project is finished on that high level your Dodge will be as good as the veeery nice Halftrack last weekend.
And yes: we all will be soooooo jealous.
Keep on doing, Joakim

Well to make it even more "too much"... they got a "zinc" based paint as 1st layer;then an epoxy ground layer...and then 2 times an OD layer...i think it will stand the repairs in the future

- My garage: Restored Old Henry, and have had this WC51 on the road around 3 years now... Currently finishing a brace of Ben Hur trailers, and starting a 67 Galaxie fastback. Concurrent with the WC I restored a 74 TR6... Oh the joys.

You're more than welcome- though I must admit(and think I did previously) I believe it was Ray Edsall who gave me the idea for the method... But I am very happy to pass it along to someone who has used it to such great effect!Skyrookie wrote:Hello Scott;

Re: My new DODGE WC-51 '43
Hello fellow dodge owners;
After months of tweaking and trial and error... today i finally managed to put in ALL the rivets for the rear crossmember :
Made a special stand for the hydraulic pump:
Home made smidt fire from old brakedrum :
Rivets pressed in :
Finally i can take the chassis to the sandblaster and give it a anti rust coating etc... and start rebuilding
greetz,
Davy
PS: Thanks to everybody for all the information ! couldn't have done this without it

Damned good job my friend! )
I think it's hard to find a WC rebuilt on that high level.
Keep on doing (remember: D-Day is coming closer...),
