Gordon and Bert with you permission may i modify this thread to an ambulance buyers guide...as i have posted i am looking to sell one of my J££ps and buy a WC54......so may i ask the board and the ambulance experts to give not only me but other potential ambulance buyers the benefit of their knowledge...so i/anyone doesnt buy a wrong un.....

If I keep the WC54 that I have now, that is my plan is to put a power wagon winch on it. I have a 1950 power wagon with winch that has a shot body but the motor and winch work great. Ever sence I missed that one back in the 1980s, I have wanted a winch mounted WC54.
M37 winch extentions will not work, they are to big.

That's exactly what I did with the WC53 Ray, retro-fitted chassis extension brackets from a Danish military Power Wagon, although I believe these brackets were introduced right at the end of the war - for example I think some Canadian APTs had them.

My very close friend here has two WC54 ambulances. As we all know that they were not issued or had winches.
My friend had a Aunt who was an Army nurse during WWII in the ETO. When she saw his ambulance she told a story about there unit having a winch on one of the ambulances. She said it was put on the ambulance from another winch truck that was destroyed.
The field hospital maintinance unit did the welding to put the winch on. This is a one on case, with no photo proof, just an old Army nurse, saying her unit made a WC54 with winch, that was added in the field.

I have a theory (with no evidence to back it up I must add) that all WC-51 owners when they dream, dream of WC-52's and all 56 owners dream of 57's.

WC 53 and 54 (and Jeep) owners, I've got no idea/opinion what they dream about.

I will now go hide in my air-raid shelter!!!

Hell, I dream of finishing my ambulance one day! Less any post war mods, of course. As for the war stories, who knows, I suppose you could make a case for just about anything.

Well I welded a winch on the front of my WC56, and very useful it was. If I had to do it again I'd probably do it 'right' and just swap everything on a winch chassis.

The ability of Mr Braden's best Dodge accessory to clear traffic in front of you is worth the extra 300lbs, and I can't say I ever noticed the weight as regards steering effort, etc.

I did fit it while everything was in place on the truck, and I should have fitted one metal shim between the PTO and the transmission as it was just making itself heard with too little clearance, but I'll get it right next time.

I have an MU winch and PTO to put on the panel van, but nowhere to fit it. Rail adapters both ends and standard bumperettes / tow hooks plus a VF grille guard make for a very cluttered truck. I can't even fit the winch midships, as i've had to find space on the chassis there for the transfer case crossmember and a side mounted spare wheel bracket.

I personally like "what if's". They are good fun, endlessly entertaining and always remind me of my granny who would say, "if you Auntie had B**ls, she would be your Uncle".

Lloyd, don't know if you're aware but there's an auction of over fifty 1930's and 40's American cars and trucks (including a WC54) at Brooklands on 3rd. March.

In my case its dreams of War & Peace in Kent UK, rivers in my local area teeming with trout and ducks and hills full of wild deer. Now you know why I hate being awake

The other dream is that our Carry-All will arrive in NZ 28th Feb (yes, this year )
