Re: Ward LaFrance series 2
Nice, is it the intermediate or rear axle you have to swap out?
I remember a shot of one of these with a broken diff casing, but it didn't look like it was past repairing. Most of the axle damage I've seen on this class of vehicle was caused by towing them too quickly for too far, without pulling the halfshafts from the worm and spur type rear axles.

Gordon;
It is the rear axle I have to swap out. The unit hanging off the rear is an NOS unit. The internals in the rear unit are out of sorts. I will have a look when we pull the bogie assembly out.

Best to swap them John.
I'd expect the broken axle will show signs of having been towed, intermediate axle might warrant a check if you do find that.
Nice truck

The whole bogie assembly wil be pulled and completetgoing thru will be done on all the components. That is next years project. For now, the intermidiate driveshaft will be removed along with the halfshafts.
Here is what the grease looked like, looks like water got into it at one time

That's pretty much like a DUKW diff when water gets in to it.
The good news is that it doesn't seem to have much negative effect on the diff and bearings, at least in the short term.
