Anyone notice something different about the star on the hood of the truck pictured above?

Is it
1 the stencil was used in the negative ?
2 the star faces the drivers side as oppossed to the front ?

I was referring to the negative type of stencil and the white infilling which is a bit unusual.

Sometimes they used gas detecting paint in and around the star but I think it was yellow/orange colour.

Gotta be the gas sensitive paint. That was taken at an 8th AF Base in England.

It may be in with the 466 BG photo album I have.

If you enlarge the image, the star seems a different colour to the white hood numbers - it appears to have a slightly yellow tinge to it.

Incidentally what colour did the detecting paint turn when set off by gas?

The hood numbers are repaints,the star was most likely not painted the time the hood numbers were redone.

Liquid Vesicant Paint came in two colors, brown, or green. It turned a reddish brick color if gas came in contact with it.

One problem with the M6 being used for anything else is that the rear body crossmember under the floor is just a thick piece of sheetmetal. It will not take much to bend it from trying to lift something too heavy.

There is a picture of an M6 in the Pacific that has dual wheels on it and fenders to match. Mine is so equipped. It feels too unstable with the narrow track (inside only duals) in the back at any speed over 20 mph.

One supposed advantage of the Ford Bomb Truck was that it was wider under the arch and that you could put a 9 cylinder radial engine there.

Why use the M-6 for anything beyond its capability?
Today's Demill requirements exist for that very same reason.

A 535 lb Chevy engine change bent it Well within the capacity of the bombs it was made to pick up.

Engine, up front-Bomb, in back. Something is wrong. Steve, you gotta unbolt the engine before attempting to remove it.

My next MV will be an M-6 to go with my M-1 Bomb Lift and its accessories.

Bomb Truck tidbit:

The BT crane assy is about 4 inches too short to install an engine after the bumper of the truck (W/O winch) meets the back of the BT

And is most likely designed for vertical lifting only. Gotta read them warning labels.

I wasn't holding the 535# motor up myself

It was vertical!

What do you believe made the chassis bend? Some of the bombs it was designed to load weighed more than 535#
